Haverhill parking manager wins national award

St Edmundsbury Council’s parking services manager, Cameron Findlay, has been voted Parking Person of the Year 2013, at a national awards ceremony held in London.

The British Parking Awards 2013, organised by Parking Review, were presented to leading people in car park management at the Lancaster London Hotel on Friday 8 March. Cameron was presented with his award by Revd. Richard Coles.

Cameron came to St Edmundsbury Borough Council in 2005 during the redevelopment of the enlarged town centre.

He refocused the front line staff from mainly enforcement, and created a traffic management team to help customers choose the right location for their stay, and to reduce on-street queuing.

“This ambassadorial culture has had a remarkable effect on compliance, with only 0.2 per cent of visits incurring a fine.

Cameron said: “I am honoured to receive this award and can truly say that there is never a dull day in car parking.

“There is tremendous job satisfaction in improving the customer experience and I have to share this recognition with colleagues past and present, who understand that.”

Cllr Terry Clements, St Edmundsbury Borough Council cabinet member for transport said,

“The image of car parking is changing as its importance to the local economy is understood.

“Cameron and his team are driving this change by constantly reviewing the customer experience, talking to businesses and innovating. The award is well deserved.”

Among the initiatives that Cameron has overseen are:

The prestigious ParkMark awarded to all 21 car parks in St Edmundsbury

Mobile phone payment in all St Edmundsbury car parks.

Installation of 95 web connected pay and display machines.

Low emissions only parking.

Electric car charging bays.

Motor homes only parking.

Complete review of tariffs.

External contracts for Suffolk County Council, National Trust and Patros.

Cameron was named joint winner of the award with Sean Cleary, commercial operations manager, Cambridge City Council.
