Cometh the winter, cometh Ernie the little egret.

For at least seven years Ernie has chosen Haverhill and district for his winter holidays. One of his favourite fishing spots is the flood relief channel below Swan Lane car park.

He is quite bold and often perches on the car park wall just a few yards from passers by. This winter he has been reported several times in this vicinity and I have seen him at West Town Park (Nov 17), Swan Lane (Jan 10) and in the Stour brook between the golf course and Pope Mill farm (Jan 23).

It’s well worth looking out for this splendid bird.
