Video: Balsham Plough Monday 2013

Waiting for Video...

The Ploughmen of Balsham were joined by the Cambridge Morris Men for their annual Plough Monday festival this week (January 7).

The Ploughmen raised almost £2,000 as they towed the plough through the village, collecting donations for local causes.

These are Meadow Primary School’s ICT project, Balsham Youth Club and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Cambridge Link.

The festival dates back to the 16th century when the Ploughmen would go through the village seeking money as they were unable to plough the land in winter.

Those refusing to give them money would have their lawns ploughed up.

After dying out the tradition was revived in Balsham in 1962, and now is held on the first Monday of each year after Epiphany (Twelfth Night).
