ONE of the big bank holiday attractions for jazz enthusiasts will be the Norwich Jazz Party, which is being staged at the Holiday Inn, Saturday to Monday.
Once again, promoters Jerry and Ann Brown and Brian Peerless have assembled a top class line-up that truly is international and they include the UK’s best, John Dankworth, Alan Barnes and Suffolk’s own Karen Sharp and, from the United States, Scott H
amilton, Howard Alden and Randy Sandke, plus many more.

The format of the weekend will feature musicians in different settings, ranging from solo to big band, and the sets include the music of the legendary Benny Goodman and the John Kirby Sextet and the arrangements of Thad Jones and Benny Carter.

Tickets for the full weekend are £150 with different prices for the different hotels.

Details on www.norwichjazzparty. com or call 01603 467777.

n ON the trad scene, the Antique Six is the attraction at Colchester Jazz Club on Sunday.

n ON a more modern note, top Irish singer Christine Tobin is the special guest at The Bell, in Clare, on Sunday. Award-winning Christine is celebrating the launch of her CD, Secret Life Of Girl, by touring the UK with her band.

In Clare, she will be in solo mode backed by the resident Roger Odell Trio.

The jazz will be in a similar mode at Mick Hutton’s new club at Lexden Wood Golf Club, near Colchester, on Saturday, when there’s an evening with the Carl Orr Trio, supported by the Shifting Sands Quartet.

n THINGS are sure to be more cerebral at Kersey Mill tomorrow, when Fleece Jazz presents the John Law Trio.

John is widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest improvising pianists.

n MORE music for thinkers will be staged by Cambridge Modern Jazz Club tomorrow, with the visit of top guitarist Phil Robson’s latest musical venture Six Strings And The Beat.

It’s a fine new working of guitar music set in a classical background.

n ANOTHER of Britain’s fine guitarists, Jim Mullen, will be in a little more of a mainstream mode when he and the Organ Trio appear at Milestones, Lowestoft’s own jazz venue, on Sunday – it’s at the Hotel Hatfield, on The Esplanade.

n FINALLY, things should be a little more relaxed when singer Larraine Odell performs at Henny Swan, near Sudbury, on Friday, May 9.

It’s a bookings only event and details can be obtained from 01787 269238.
