A case of political opposites

I read with interest James Paice MP (Conservative) for south east Cambs calling for a two-year freeze on council tax in his column for the Echo (Feb 12).
Unfortunately his words seem to have fallen on deaf ears among his Conservative colleagues on Cambridgeshire County Council, who have just imposed a 4 per cent hike in their council tax rates – one of the highest in the region.

Mr Paice’s constituents look likely to be hit by a double tax whammy as the Conservative-controlled South Cambs Council seems set to impose a similar increase on already-overburdened tax payers.

As Mr Paice ends his column by stating he will do all he can to help the people of SE Cambs, perhaps he can start by using his influence to get these swingeing increases reversed.

Otherwise we can only conclude this is another case of a political party saying one thing while in opposition and doing the exact opposite when in power.

JOHN TAYLOR,

Claydon Close, Castle Camps.
