Flood park tidying is angling club's responsibility

Like Mrs G Evans (Letters, Echo February 21), I have seen the disgraceful mess left by fishermen at the flood park, a real blot on the landscape.
In reply, P Kingdon (Letters, Echo February 28) points out that, under the terms of the Environment Agency lease, anyone can apply for a day permit and that it is these outsiders, not angling club members, who are to blame.

The club has strict ru
les on litter and anyone caught is banned from fishing but catching the culprits is not easy, he says.

He goes on to criticise dog owners who don't clear up and warn Mrs Evans and other park users not to trespass on angling club land which, apparently, extends 14 metres back from the water.

Of course dog owners and, indeed, all users have a responsibility to keep the park tidy, but pointing the finger at others and issuing petty warnings are red herrings.

Regardless of who is to blame, the angling club has a duty as leaseholder to clear up the litter round the lake.

A regular litter sweep with bin bags would go a long way towards solving the problem.

The angling club should also deal with the menace of discarded fishing line and hooks which killed two birds at the lake last November.
