From May 1, the village stores in Kedington will be charging from 2p to 5p for a plastic carrier bag.
Owners Dilip and Daxa Visana should be applauded for taking this action.
Plastic carrier bags blight the landscape and take up to a thousand years to rot.
They kill huge numbers of sea birds, whales, dolphins, turtles and seals.
In Ireland charging for bags has cut their use by 70 per cent.
I'm sure the Visanas' customers will support this move, especially as money raised will go to a local charity.
But the real aim is to cut the number of bags being issued, currently 13 billion a year.
It's high time other shops followed suit, especially supermarkets which are dragging their feet.
However, it's really up to us to do our bit by re-using our bags or preferably switching permanently to cotton bags.
And don't forget to take them with you when you go shopping!
Shaun Jarvis,
Westward Deals,
Kedington.
