I moved here five years ago from south London. I love the scenic views and the people are most friendly and welcoming.
However, regarding the roads, when we came to move here we had to drive along the A1307 and did indeed notice all the memorials along the side of the road, and since we have lived here there have been many more deaths and three new memorials.
It is
sad and alarming but at the same time showed us, as a family, that this particular stretch of road was one to be careful on.
We drive no faster that the speed limit and keep our wits about us. I have warned my sons to always think when using it and always wear their seatbelts.
The sad conclusion about the road concerns the dangerous people who use it with no regard for other users.
The road is a wide, fairly straight one with good vision. It's just the idiots that are always in far too much of a hurry to die or to kill that make it so dangerous.
I think the only reason Cambridgeshire County Council wants the memorials removed is because they are becoming an embarrassment – they appear to show that the council cares little for the lives lost along this road and more about budgets.
If it was to renew the majority of cats' eyes along the road, people could then see where they were going when it is dark and when approaching bends (this is something that we noticed straightaway when we moved here and five years on they are just the same).
To slow the traffic down it should install several variable speed cameras.
This would mean that drivers have to drive at the specified speed for the stretch of road and if they increase it any where along that road it would be calculated and they indeed would receive points and fines. This would make them think.
The road is a nice road, it's just the idiots that use it.
I think that the memorials should stay and the council should think itself lucky that every grieving family who has lost someone along this road hasn't put one in place, because there would be 25 from the last ten years.
The council should be ashamed that it wants to hide this problem rather than address it in the way the people have been saying for years.
