Home of famous children’s author for sale
The house where Winnie the Pooh creator AA Milne lived is for sale in Steeple Bumpstead for £1.275m.
Alan Alexander Milne was born in London in 1882 and lived at Broadgate with his parents, in the early 20th century whilst he was studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, he edited Granta magazine, and later wrote for Punch magazine and as a freelance journalist.
It was after the birth of his son Christopher, that he found fame through Pooh, who became the most famous bear in the world.
The grand Broadgate House, which dates back to the 16th century, is in the centre of the village next to the church and has two acres of grounds. A mature wellingtonia tree and a mulberry must predate Milne’s time in Steeple Bumpstead. His name appears at Broadgate House in the 1911 census.
The house was substantially altered in the 18th and 19th centuries and also has a coach house, a tennis lawn and an outdoor swimming pool.
Schuyler Pratt of Jackson-Stops & Staff, which is marketing the property, said: “Broadgate House is the epitome of a fine village house being within walking distance of the village and its facilities but lying somewhat set back from the street, and enjoying such wonderful spacious and private grounds.
“The literary associations may be of interest to some but with or without such provenance , Broadgate House stands alone as a charming property.”
Despite being a pacifist, Milne served as a signalling officer in WW1 on the Western Front. He was sent home with trench fever in 1916.
After the war he returned to his post at Punch magazine.
He moved to Sussex when he married. He died in 1956.
