Woman in Black at Cambridge Arts Theatre
The Woman in Black returns to Cambridge Arts Theatre as a part of its 25th anniversary tour.
A lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to blur.
Heralded as the most spine-chilling exercise in terrifying tension Woman in Black was first performed at the Theatre-By-The-Sea in Scarborough in 1987. Put together with a shoestring budget, this play within a play sold out, transferring to the Lyric Hammersmith a yearlater. It opened in the West End in 1989 where it has been a major audience puller ever since. Its success has subsequently reached a global level and secured numerous awards.
Taking on the role of Arthur Kipps is Julian Forsyth. His recent stage work includes Measure for Measure (Royal Shakespeare Company), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (National Theatre). He is joined by Antony Eden, as the Actor, who comes straight from the West End run of The Woman in Black after starring in Lion Witch Wardrobe (New Vic) and Something Wicked (National Theatre of Scotland).
The play is on January 28 until February 2.
