The Manger Pub and Stables, in Bradfield Combust, is steeped in history. The Manger is known to be at least 500 years old and offers drinkers and diners a magical history tour. The Manger stands opposite Bradfield Hall, on the A134 Sudbury Road, just five miles outside Bury St Edmunds and so provides that authentic country feel.

The Manger has been used as a coaching inn for most of its history – and The Stables Bistro, which was originally used to house travellers’ horses, has been converted into a restaurant by the current owner. The Stables Bistro offers the same menu as The Manger, and is also available for private functions – offering the perfect venue for a wedding or party for up to 50 guests. But it is the menu at The Manger which will really whet everyone’s appetite.

Starters range from garlic bread to fish cakes and delicious nachos. The home-made soup of the day is prepared freshly by the chef and served with warm, crusty bread. On the main menu, there are enough dishes to leave you with a very tough choice. Somerset chicken, Redcurrant lamb and Pork moutarde take the eye immediately, while yummy vegetarian options, an impressive grill and tasty fish courses are guaranteed to make your mouth water. The lunch menu is split into the Light Lunch section, sandwiches and baguettes and jacket potatoes. The Manger Ploughman’s will fill the heartiest of lunchtime hunger pangs. There is an extensive wine menu, while diners can also enjoy wine by the glass.

It’s only a couple of months to the Christmas period – and The Manger’s festive menu features traditional favourites coupled with tasty alternatives, such as Wild boar terrine starter, Baked loin of cod followed by Panacotta. Totally tasty – with coffee and mince pies thrown in. Book early! If you fancy a trip, book on 01284 386516.

The Manger is open from Monday to Saturday, midday to 2.30pm and 6.30-11pm. On Sundays, it is open from midday to 3pm and 7-11pm.

This week you have the chance to win a meal for two at The Manger, to the value of £30. Drink is not included. All you have to do to try to win this delicious prize is answer the following question and email your answer to jan.shepherd@buryfreepress.co.uk to arrive by Friday, October 17

The question is: The Manger stands opposite which hall?

The first all-correct entry opened after that date will be the winner. The prize must be taken within one month of winning and cannot be exchanged for cash. Open to readers of LifeStyle, usual Anglia Newspapers rules apply. Employees and their relatives of both Anglia Newspapers and The Manger are not eligible to enter.
