A 'CAREER criminal' who carried out a series of terrifying armed raids on bookmakers in the south and east of England - including two in Haverhill - has been imprisoned for 12 years.
Nicholas Smith, who earned the moniker 'Bookie Bandit' after robbing the Ladbrokes branch in Camps Road, Haverhill in February and May 2007, was handed the prison term by Judge Alan Greenwood when he appeared at Harrow Crown Court on Friday.
The 58-year-old, from Tempsford Avenue, Borehamwood, had previously pleaded guilty to eight bookmakers' robberies in 2006 and 2007, which included shops in Cambridge, Spalding, Hatfield, Harrow Weald, Isleworth and Feltham. A haul that netted him £13,338, none of which was ever recovered.
Smith, who in September 2005 was released on licence after serving a life sentence, was told by Judge Greenwood that he must serve a minimum of six years behind bars and can only be released if the parole board deem him not to be a threat to society
