HAVERHILL’S bus station has been branded a ‘disgrace’ and ‘like Kosovo’ by town councillors.

Haverhill Town Council was sent a letter from a woman who had visited the town for the recent street festival, but who was appalled by the sight which gre
eted her on alighting from her bus.

At Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council’s community first committee, councillors agreed to put pressure on St Edmundsbury and Suffolk County councils to begin improvements to the bus station.

But they were told work was unlikely to start before January 2009.

Council clerk Gordon Mussett said: “The borough council had a plan to refurbish the bus shelters.

“The county council came in at a late stage to enhance the bus shelters a bit more, but there’s a problem with designing the bus station at the moment.”

He said due to lessons learned from the borough council’s Jubilee Walk development, paving slabs would not be laid during the winter months to prevent problems.

Cllr Margaret Marks said: “I agree with the lady who wrote the letter. I think it’s an absolute disgrace.

“It feels as though you are coming into Kosovo or something.”
