LES Ager has been elected to the role of Haverhill town mayor for 2008/2009, after the past few months standing in following the death of in-post mayor Ted Trebble.
The election of Cllr Ager was unopposed, as was the election of deputy mayor Cllr Elaine McManus.

Cllr Ager thanked the council, town council officers Gordon Mussett, Nick Keeble and Vicky Ward and his wife for their support and said he hoped to u
se his musical background to run some charity concerts during the next year.

After accepting the role at Tuesday's annual meeting of the council, he said: "I'd consider it an honour to be the town mayor.

"If anyone had said to me two-and-a-half years ago when I joined the town council that I would have become mayor in such a short space of time, I wouldn't have believed them.

"But, as many of you know, I'm an old Haverhill boy, born not 200 yards from this building (Haverhill Arts Centre) and have taken an interest in the things going on in the town."

He added: "I had to take over from Ted Trebble when he had his stroke and I visited him many times.

"He was making good progress and always wanted to know what the rest of the town council was up to and remained interested right until when I saw him the Monday before he died."
