A GRIEVING Haverhill middle school held a memorial assembly in honour of a popular member of staff, who died earlier this year.
Ken Douglas, behaviour support assistant at Parkway Middle School, died aged 44, after a heart attack.

His widow spoke at the assembly and a cheque for £1,000, raised in Mr Douglas' memory, was given to British Heart Foundation.

Acting headteacher Ian Kearns said: "In the time he was here he became a very, very popular member of staff, not only with the staff but the children as well.

"They could relax and explain their side of things."

Mr Douglas, who lived in Sudbury, used to deal with naughty children and helped many to deal with their personal issues.

One pupil read a poem at his funeral earlier in the year.

Mr Kearns said: "The school was really grieving so the school council decided it wanted to do something and that resulted in raising money for the British Heart Foundation."
