HAVERHILL town councillors have 'unreservedly' given their backing to plans for the town's new £1.7m community football scheme.
The council's planning committee voted on Tuesday to support the proposals for the long-awaited scheme, which has been on the table for more than 20 years, in Chalkstone Way.

Town councillor Phillip French, who chaired the meeting, said: "We welco
med it in it's entirety.

"It's been long enough in coming. It's been well over 20 years since it was started off with an idea. It's going to be very prestigious.

"We had no reservations at all. It was the one item (on the agenda) I thought we might get hung up on but that didn't happen."

The scheme would see a new stadium built for Haverhill Rovers, with clubhouse and community changing room facilities.

There would also be a floodlit training pitch and three other community use pitches.

Rovers' new home would feature a seated covered stand and a standing covered stand for supporters.

Some Chalkstone estate residents have previously expressed concern over potential car parking problems in the event of a large attendance for a match.

Cllr French said: "I think at the end of the day there will be plenty of car parking up there.

"We can come up with some sort of unofficial car park if there's any big one-off event up there."

The project will now be considered by St Edmundsbury Council's development control committee.
