THE Imperial War Museum in Duxford has fought off the challenge from some of the country's best known attractions to scoop the top prize in a national tourism award.
The museum claimed Gold in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category at the National Enjoy England Awards for Excellence ceremony held recently in Liverpool.
Richard Ashton, director of the museum, said: "I am absolutely delighted that we h
ave won.
"We are constantly striving to enchance the visitor experience at Duxford as well as showcase, to the best of our ability, the wonderful and amazing collection in our care.
"To be recognised in this way for our commitment is a great honour and a testament to the hard work and dedication of my team - the staff, volunteers and partners at Duxford who do so much to make any visit to the museum a memorable and enjoyable experience."
The museum triumphed in its category despite stiff competition from its fellow finalists the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle.
All three finalists had to meet strict criteria such as service and customer care and were selected by a judging panel from more than 100 regional winners submitted by England's nine regional tourism partners.
