St Edmundsbury Borough Council is warning residents about a telephone scam operating in the borough that promises a Council Tax rebate but is actually a way of fraudulently obtaining bank details.
This morning a lady in Bury St Edmunds received a call from someone purporting to be from the borough council, saying that there had been a Council Tax revaluation and that she was due a refund. She was then asked for her bank account details.

The Borough Council says that there has been no revaluation of residential properties and warns residents not to give out their financial details if asked. People should tell the police or trading standards if they get such a call and make sure others are aware of the scam to avoid them being taken in.
