The principal of Thurston Community College has paid tribute to ‘intelligent, likeable and popular’ student Ben Wragge who died after he was shot with an air gun.

In a statement on the college’s website, Helen Wilson said they are ‘deeply saddened’ by the ‘tragic’ death of 13-year-old Ben, who passed away yesterday after an incident at an address in Thurston.

He died as a result of an injury caused by an air pellet.

Miss Wilson said: “This is a heart-breaking time for Thurston Community College, Thurston village and our wider community. We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Ben Wragge.

“Ben was a mature and intelligent young man. As a member of Year 9 and Penrose House, he was an extremely likeable character, whose calm and respectful demeanour made him popular across the College. Ben will be sadly missed by his friends and staff.

“The aftermath of this tragedy will be felt throughout our entire community. Our immediate priority is to provide support for those students affected.

She confirmed that the college will be open today and assemblies will be held at the start of the day to pay tribute to Ben and to update students on how they can access support.

Flowers have been placed outside the college in his memory.

Meanwhile, tributes have also been paid to Ben on a Facebook page - R.I.P Ben Wragge.
