End of the world did not happen, but we like to know the future

There was a spurious prophecy, given a lot of publicity, that the end of the world was going to take place on December 21, 2012.

Inevitably it didn’t happen, but it does seem that we often have a fascination with knowing what the future will bring.

It seems to me that Jesus warned against inflated prophecies that predicted specific dates and times, choosing instead to steer his disciples towards living productive lives that included helping others and having a relationship with Him.

However He also encouraged His disciples to learn to predict the ‘signs of the times’ (A read of Matthew’s gospel chapters 24 and 25 may help to illustrate this).

We may not be able to specifically predict the future but I do think a Christian faith can help us to be prepared for what may come.

For instance, Paul, one of the early church leaders, wrote that his faith had taught him to be content with either little or plenty.

Furthermore he indicated a belief that prayer helps us to overcome the anxieties of this life.

It would be easy to look at the world in which we live, and the ‘signs of the times’, and be filled with dread but, for me, a practical Christian life helps us to both prepare for the future and even, in some ways, influence it for the good.

Have a great a 2013 and I pray that you are able to know God’s help in all that you do.
