Haverhill man on trial for rape

A Haverhill man is accused of raping a schoolgirl, Ipswich Crown Court was told.

Anthony Farrant, 51, of Eastern Avenue, is alleged to have attacked the teenager and sexually abused the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, indecently at an address in the town.

The allegations came to light when the girl spoke to a friend about problems she was experiencing.

When speaking about Farrant to her friend, the girl had referred to him as ‘Suspect A’, said Lori Tucker prosecuting.

Ms Tucker told the jury that following his arrest, Farrant had denied that any of the alleged offences ever took place.

He has pleaded not guilty to six charges of rape, three of oral rape, two of assault by penetration and one of sexual assault.

Eight of the rape offences took place at a house in Haverhill and one in a lane in the town, claimed Ms Tucker.

Members of the jury watched a 90-minute DVD recording of a police interview with the girl in which she detailed her allegations against Farrant.

On some occasions when she was ALLEGEDLY raped by Farrant, he had not used a condom, said the girl, and at times he became angry and had grabbed her by the hair and pinned her down by the wrist.

The trial continues this week at Ipswich Crown Court.
