Three Haverhill postmen who go by the collective name, The Fairly Average Triathletes, are to take part in the London Triathlon next month in aid of the Stroke Association.
Tony ‘Fat Lad at the Back’ Clarke, 51, Craig ‘Thunderpants’ Drury, 51 and Dave ‘Toyboy’ Hastings, 53 will be taking part in the Olympic distance triathlon on August 7.
Although all three have participated in triathlons previously none of them have ever undertaken the challenge of the full distance triathlon, which comprises a 1,500 metre swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run.
Tony, who last year took part in the London Triathlon sprint category, said: “We are doing it for the Stroke Association because the Royal Mail are sponsoring it this year and because I’ve had involvement because of my father, before he died, with the Stroke Association, so it was something I wanted to do it for.
“It is a challenge and it is for a good cause.
“What we do like is that the Royal Mail are matching everything we raise pound for pound.”
Tony, of Sible Hedingham, Dave, of Haverhill and Craig, of Clare, have known each other through work for four years and did their first triathlon together three years ago.
Last weekend they all completed the Gosfield Sprint Triathlon as part of their preparation for London, while the trio also swim twice weekly at Gosfield Lake and have regular sessions in the gym to keep up their fitness levels.
Although they are taking on an Olympic distance triathlon for the first time in London, Tony said their confidence is still high.
He said: “It is doable. It’s just going to be hard, but we know we can do it.”
Tony thanked Colne Smart Repairs for their sponsorship of the trio.
