Two friends are preparing to embark on the longest walk of their lives this weekend.

David Jaggs, of Haverhill, and Kim Spencer, of Stradishall, will walk through the night on Saturday as they take on the London 2 Cambridge 100km Ultra Challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The pair, who have been training since December, will be given a 30-hour time limit to complete the challenge.

David signed up for the event to prove he ‘could still do things’ after going through a difficult period in his life.

He began suffering with depression after being made redundant from Queen Street clothes shop Morley’s when it closed in 2014. He had worked there almost three decades and managed it for eight years.

“I’m having better days now than I did so it has helped,” said David, who is ‘really looking forward’ to taking part.

Kim, who asked David if he would like a ‘training partner’ after learning of his involvement on Facebook, said: “I’m excited about doing it, I’m anxious about doing it and sometimes I feel I need my head examined.”

On why it is so important to her, she said: “I lost my mum to cancer 13 years ago this month and I’ve had friends who have had cancer as well, some have recovered and some, unfortunately, haven’t.

“It’s something that affects so many people, either directly or indirectly, and to find a cure for it would make such a massive difference to so many lives, so I’m just doing my little bit to help.”

David said: “I’m one of the lucky ones because my mum survived cancer and she’s still with us, but a lot of people aren’t as fortunate and I want to help others survive. The more we can raise for research, the better survival rate people are going to get.”
