Have your say

Haverhill Choral Society members are currently busy rehearsing for their next concert at Haverhill’s Old Independent Church on Saturday, April 12 at 7.30pm.

Having over the last few seasons performed what are perhaps the better-known works by Mozart, Verdi and Faure, by contrast the Brahms Requiem is overall a soothing, sometimes poignant piece.

Brahms was prompted to compose this upon the death of his mother and claims he could have called it his “Human Requiem”.

The music comforts, calms, suggests hope whilst still acknowledging the tragedy of death and succeeds in capturing the nuances of emotion vital to the subject.

The concert is performed by almost 50 members of the Society supported by an orchestra of mainly local musicians and features harpist Dannielle Perett, soprano and baritone soloists Penny Manser and Nick Fowler all under the direction of musical director Jane Wright.

It is testament to Jane’s skills that the choir succeed in presenting works of this standard.

Tickets which include refreshments cost £8 and are available on the door or by telephoning 01440 761613.
