A 93-year-old man from Haverhill has been charged with committing five sex offences against a girl over a ten year period between the early 1970s and the start of the 1980s.

Frederick Smith, of Place Court Care Home in Camps Road, appeared at West Suffolk Magistrates Court in Bury St Edmunds last Friday (March 14) to face the five counts against him.

All five charges relate to sexual offences committed in Haverhill against the same girl when she was still aged under 14.

It is alleged he indecently assaulted the girl on four separate occasions between April 28, 1972 and April 27, 1982.

Smith also faced one charge of gross indecency with the girl between April 28, 1972 and April 27, 1976.

Following the hearing before the magistrates the case was adjourned until April 1 when it will be dealt with at Ipswich Crown Court.

Smith was given conditional bail.
