An animal sanctuary near Haverhill is in desperate need of a replacement portable building to house animals after the one they have was irreparably damaged in recent high winds.

Following the damage to the building at Jaybeth in Barnardiston, the animals that were inside it have had to be found alternative accommodation and a halt put on taking in any more emergency animals until another building is found.

The owner and founder of Jaybeth, Carol Harris, said: “we desperately need a Portakabin, basically for emergency animal housing. The roof has gone on the one we had.

“The Portakabin roof ripped open and is not repairable.

“It’s leaking and we can’t use it. It’s done us good service but it’s got to be replaced.

“I can’t take any more animals in until we replace this building. It’s always a bad time of year, the winter, because more animals are borough to us because people have to go into the hospital or wherever.”

Carol, who is now in her 37th year of running the sanctuary, which sits next to the A143, said the building needs to be a portable building and not a caravan because the former of the two does not require planning permission.

Emphasising the ‘very urgent’ need for the replacement building, Carol added: “We’ve got Guinea pigs and injured wild birds. We did have cats in there but we’ve had to move them temporarily into another old van where we have got space.”

Not only does she need a portable building, but Carol also requires some more fencing materials after the winds also caused damage to what she already has.

She said: “If anyone has any building materials left over surplus to requirements we can start putting some fences back up. That would be appreciated.

“We try our best, but we still need materials to patch things up with, that’s the problem.”

Fencing needs to be wooden or solid mesh in style.

Carole went on to say: “I want to thank everyone who continued to support us throughout the whole year, including Christmas and New Year.

“It was fantastic. It was really heartwarming.”
