Armed robbery on A14 witnesses sought

Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a petrol service station in the early hours of this morning, Friday 15 February.

Police were called at approximately 12.35am with a report that two men had entered the service station on the A14 westbound carriageway at Rowley Mile, Newmarket, one held what appeared to be a small handgun and the other held a canister of liquid.

One of the men threatened the cashier with the gun whilst the other sprayed a customer within the shop area with an unknown liquid from the canister.

Neither the cashier nor the customer was injured during the incident although the customer has stated he felt a burning sensation from the liquid, but this has not required treatment.

The two men made off with a small quantity of cash and ran from the scene leaving across the forecourt, over a fence towards Newmarket heath and racecourse.

Officers attended the scene and searches were conducted with the police helicopter and specialist police dogs.

Enquiries are continuing today with witness statements being taken and CCTV footage being viewed.

Police are very keen to hear from anyone who was in the area who may have information in relation to this incident.

The first man who held what appeared to be a small handgun is described as around 6ft tall, of medium build wearing a hooded top, blue jeans, blue and white shoes a balaclava and gloves.

The second man who held the canister was slightly shorter, he wore a black hat with a scarf around his face, a black padded jacket, dark trousers, trainers and gloves.
