At the hub of the new technology

YOUNG contributors with an eye for design and multi-media are being sought to flex their creative muscles and get involved with a new Haverhill-based project.

For the last six weeks a group of about 30 youngsters, aged from 13 to 19, have been working alongside a team of film and media professionals to create website content for the innovative CB9 Media Hub project.

The project is managed by Haverhill Town Council, with support from St Edmundsbury Council and a 20,000 grant from the Government’s Mediabox programme, and aims to encourage and develop young people’s skills and interests in design, film-making, web animation and design, writing blogs and creating web-zine content.

Participants will be able to learn skills via the project to help them aquire the nationally recognised Bronze Arts Award.

Michelle Brace, youth projects officer with Haverhill Town Council, said: “This project is gathering momentum all the time.

“It will have a life well beyond March 2008 when the initial grant from Mediabox comes to an end.

“We envisage that the Media Hub will be the creative force to continue running media workshops, Hub Clubs and creative projects for many years to come.”

Hub Clubs have been set up at Castle Manor and Samuel Ward Colleges and the Cangle Foyer, where weekly creative meetings are held.

At the core of all the project does is a four-strong steering group, representing all the Hub Clubs, which run things from the CB9 Media Hub in Haverhill Arts Centre.

They have had a say in every stage of the project, choosing paint and furniture for the hub room, having an input into the design of its logo ( helped by local branding specialists The Design Office), devising the publicity and marketing campaign, membership scheme and the website, www.cb9mediahub.org.uk.

To help develop the project further, contributions are being sought for the website in the form of links, artwork, photos, poems, cartoons, information on events, blogs, music, ideas, reviews, news and views. Contributors must be aged 13 to 19.

Steering group member, Connor Halpin, 15, hopes to gain more skills through the project to boost his acting aspirations.

He said: “If I get this Bronze Arts Award it would help if I applied for a place at college.”

Josh Wallis, also 15, said: “As a DJ I have to use some computers. We work on computers quite a bit here and that does help a lot.”

The Media Hub will also offer more choice for young people in Haverhill, as aspiring film-maker, 15-year-old Amy Barrett pointed out: “We need to get more things for the younger generation.”
