Just one year after stepping in to buy a Haverhill pre-school and therefore save it from closure the new owners are celebrating winning Best New Start-up at the Bury Free Press Business Awards.
Lilypads Day Nursery and Pre-School, in Burton End won the title at the awards ceremony when it was held at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds last Friday (September 20).
Co-owners Dawn Edwards and Hayley Peacock received the award from renowned broadcaster Nicholas Owen and Menta chief executive Alex Till, much to their delight.
Hayley said: “We knew we were in the final three but we didn’t know we had won.
“We waited for our category to be read out and it was amazing. We were really proud, we have only been going for one year.
“We were the only Haverhill business to win an award and the only childcare provider in any category for the awards.”
In August 2013 the business - than called Home from Home Nursery - would have closed had Dawn and Hayley not taken decisive action.
Hayley said: “The previous owner decided to shut the place so Dawn and I decided to go for it and buy it.
“It would have left people out of jobs and the child care would have been lost to parents that would have needed spaces.”
