The national trend of stealing cooking oil has arrived in Haverhill with thieves targeting five Queen Street stores.
Between Friday (August 9) night and Saturday (August 10) morning, used cooking oil was stolen from the back of Smart Fish Bar, USA Chicken, Star Burger and Top Chef, while a lock to Brownies was broken but nothing was taken.
Inspector Peter Ferrie said: “There’s been this string of thefts which has been a national thing that has come to Haverhill last weekend, and that’s stealing used cooking oil.
“They’ve been here before but just did one place and we’re assuming it’s the same people.
“The restaurants probably don’t think this old cooking oil is worth a lot.”
He said the thieves were snatching 200 litre drums of cooking oil, but in one instance there was only ten lt in the drum and in another the drum was half full.
Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
Nationally there has been an increase in cooking oil being stolen as criminals use it to make vehicle fuel, though it can damage engines if used.
