The Mayor of St Edmundsbury, Cllr Tim Marks, announces the the switch on of Clare's Christmas lights

The centre of Clare was throbbing with people last Friday (November 23) as the community gathered to celebrate its Christmas light switch on.

The smell of hotdogs and mulled wine permeated the night-time air as the crowds built up in Market Hill ready for the moment when the switch was flicked by special guest, the Mayor of St Edmundsbury, Cllr Tim Marks.

In keeping with the recent traditions of Clare’s festive event, a bagpipe player led a procession, largely made up of children carrying free glow sticks, from outside Hurst’s Bakery in High Street down to Market Hill via Bucks Lane in time for the crucial moment.

The choirs of Stour Valley Community School and Clare Primary School were also in attendance to provide more festive music.

A children’s entertainer helped keep the younger members among the crowd occupied, while fairground rides were also laid on to add to the atmosphere of fun.

The event, which as usual was organised by members of the community, also included hot refreshments such as mulled wine and hot dogs, plus the usual festive fare of mince pies.

The wine, mince pies and hot dogs were all donated by business in the town.
