The Society for Music in Clare Church has announced its programme of performances for 2013 - one that includes a new venture involving an internationally renowned singer and conductor.

With its line up of concerts complete for 2013, the society is also looking to reach out to a broader audience.

Geoffrey Bray, who organises the concerts with the help of fellow enthusiasts Pamela Garlick and Tony Taylor, explained: “We’ve now got a mailing list of just under 300 people.

“We are trying to widen the audience, so it comes from further afield and not just from Clare.”

The first of the concerts on March 9 will take the form of a scratch choir performing The Fauré Requiem and other short choral works, which will be led by conductor and singer Tom Appleton.

Mr Appleton is the musical director of the Kings Lynn Festival Chorus and Milton Keynes Chorale and last year performed in New York’s Carnegie Hall, at the Paris Opera Comique and also sang a solo at the BBC Proms.

He will take singers through their paces in morning and afternoon sessions before they perform an evening concert.

Singers of all abilities are welcome to attend and Mr Bray said the aim is to get about 60 singers involved.

Mr Bray said: “The concerts arranged for 2013 will provide a range of music that will appeal to those of a somewhat conservative classical and light music taste.”

Other than The Fauré Requiem, the society has four other concerts planned this year.

On Saturday, May 11, The Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra will play a selection of light classical music.

On Saturday, July 13 The Nonsuch Singers will sing sacred and secular music.

On Saturday, September 14 the internationally known Danté Quartet, will perform from their classical repertoire.

On Saturday, December 7 the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge will perform a programme of Christmas music.

Any surplus funds from the concerts are used to maintain the church.
