Overall crime has fallen in Haverhill, though sex offences, drug crime and acquisitive crime (theft, burglary, etc) have all risen.
Acting Inspector Gary Miller spoke to Haverhill Town Council on Tuesday (September 3), and said crime overall in the year to date, compared to a three-year average, has dropped from 1,049 to 973.
Violence against the person has dropped from 189 to 173, criminal damage and arson from 265 to 165 and all other crime from 20 to 12.
However, drug crime rose from 36 to 53 and acquisitive crime from 470 to 496.
Sex crimes are also on the rise, from 20 up to 24.
Public order offence remained the same at 50 while incidents of anti-social behaviour fell from 882 to 712.
Insp Miller said some of the rises are due to pro-active policing and better detection, and high-visibility and plain-clothes patrols had been out due to the spate of burglaries.
Alex Hockett, 32, of Elmdon Place, Haverhill, has been charged with the burglary of a home in Beaumont Vale and is in custody awaiting his crown court appearance tomorrow (Tuesday, September 10).
