Dan looks to Ignite interest in new station

Dan Bell has launched a new online radio station called Ignite Radio.

A budding young radio presenter is looking to see his popular new station grow even further after more than 5,000 people tuned in during the first month.

Dan Bell, 15, has launched online station Ignite Radio, playing chart music and featuring a variety of shows.

Now the Linton Village College student, from Bumpstead Road, Haverhill, is hoping to attract more presenters to the station and get more shows to help its listenership increase further still.

“With more and more teenagers listening to online radio stations rather than digital or FM stations, I thought now would be the time to create one of my own,” he said.

“Our stats show that in the past 30 days we have reached more than 5,000 listeners, which is phenomenal for a small station like Ignite.”

The station is geared towards 13 to 25 year olds, and features top 40 music as well as 1980’s themed ‘Feel Good Anthems’ between 9pm and midnight daily.

Ignite is a 24 hour station, and in addition to chart music there are various shows such as Dan’s on Mondays and Thursdays at 8pm, Feel Good shows from 3pm to 5pm on Saturdays and Wednesday love from 7pm to 9pm that day.

Dan currently has around 20 presenters involved doing their own shows from home, ranging from Scotland and Newcastle to Cambridge, though he would like 30 presenters and is searching for more people to get involved and offer to do their own show.

He came up with the idea after his previous station – Haverhill FM – failed to catch on.

“We were getting maybe three listeners a week,” said Dan, who had expected to get 70 a week with Ignite and hopes one day to become a Radio One DJ.

“The main reason I made Ignite is to give others the opportunity to get into the radio industry and build their skills and confidence, and it’s also a good reference on the CV.”

Dan is now aiming to study radio at Cambridge Regional College before looking for radio work in the BBC to emulate his idol, Radio One DJ Aled Hayd Jones, who was a presenter on the Chris Moyles Show and gives Dan tips through Twitter.
