Disaster was averted today (August 29) after a fire broke out at a Withersfield joinery.

Fire crews were called to the J. Bradnams & Sons joinery in Withersfield at 8.09am in response to a fire.

Two crews from Haverhill were mobilised and, upon arrival, discovered a small fire in the dust extraction unit.

One hose reel and two sets of breathing apparatus were used to fight the fire.

“We just caught it in time,” said Steven Mays, 57, company director at J. Bradnams & Sons. “A dust extractor caught light.

“It was caused by combustion heat. It’s not common but it happens.

“It could have been a lot worse but, luckily, we noticed it before it took hold.

“We got it first with fire extinguishers and then the fire service got here.

“The emergency services got here just in time. If it had caught there would have been nothing that could have been done.”

The incident was under control by 08:24am.
