Family’s anger after chrome lantern is stolen from mother’s grave in Haverhill cemetery
A woman has expressed her disgust after the theft of a lantern from her mother’s grave last month.
The 48 year old, who did not want to be named, told how the thief had walked across her mother’s grave – evident by the footprints in the snow – and then made away with the chrome lantern.
“My dad would go up there and light it every single day, then one day he went there and the lantern he had put there for her had gone,” she said.
“He’d been lighting the candle for the last one and a half years since my mother died, and this was his way of remembering her.
“We could see that whoever it was had walked right across her grave – disrespectful and disgusting are words that come to mind.”
The mother died aged 70 in August 2011 following a fight against Alzheimer’s, and was buried in the Haverhill Cemetery.
She left behind three children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
“We’re all very close and that’s why it hurts so much,” added the daughter.
“My father is absolutely gutted – it doesn’t matter whether it cost £1 or £100 it’s that someone stole it from her grave.
“He was distressed and it was horrible to see him like that as lighting the candle was what he did every day.
“What’s really annoying is that we can’t do anything about it, and it makes me so cross.”
She urged anyone who may have been presented with the lantern to return it.
“If there’s someone out there that’s been presented with a lovely lantern for their garden, or even more sickeningly someone else’s grave, then please put it back where it belongs – our mum’s grave.
“Maybe a child took it home, but then why are they wandering around a cemetery? It makes me so cross.”
