The first Haverhill Jobs Fair has been hailed a success after a queue grew to get in at the town’s football club last Friday.

Organiser, West Suffolk MP Matthew Hancock, who is also Minister for Skills, told the Echo that more than 200 people from sixth form students to the unemployed and people wanting a change of career had been keen to meet the 25 exhibitors.

“It’s amazing what’s available career wise in Haverhill,” he said. “I didn’t know, for instance that the stage for Phantom of the Opera was made here by Delstar Engineering. We have software companies, established companies like Sainsbury’s and many innovative firms.

“The fair is bringing together people looking for a job, employers and the National Jobs Service.”

Mr Hancock added that Haverhill’s unemployment is relatively low and falling, although no unemployment is good. “We are better than most places in the country, but everywhere we want to imporove skills and chances for young people.

“We have a very go-getting job centre here which really helps.”

Among those exhibiting were staff from HMP Highpoint, many Haverhill companies and the National Apprenticeship Service.

Workshops and sessions, such as CV writing, were run throughout the day.
