From Afghanistan to Haverhill, with thanks
Samuel Ward Academy students Jessica Potter and George Lumm read the letters sent to them by British soldiers in Afghanistan
British soldiers stationed in Afghanistan have written in person to students at a Haverhill school to thank them for sending them Christmas gifts.
The troops from the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and Search Task Force sent the letters to the students at Samuel Ward Academy in gratitude to the dozens of boxes that were sent to them in time for Christmas.
One of the letters, from the squadron’s commanding officer, Major Simon Doyle, said: “Boxes of the sort you have despatched make a real difference.
“Often the teams will make an event of the arrival of these packages, collecting a few together, then opening them as a team.
“A two hour discussion about the relative merits of different types of instant noodles has to be heard to be believed!”
Sgt Dan Farbrace said in his letter: “We are always happy whenever we get any mail or parcels but it always feels a little more special when we get things from people we have never met.”
