Haverhill charity workers witness tragedy

editorial image

A group of workers from a Haverhill based charity have witnessed a tragedy in Africa first-hand in which at least seven people have died.

Members of the Focus on Africa charity were relaxing by a hotel pool in Kisumu, Kenya, on Wednesday evening after working at a school when the building under construction next door suddenly collapsed.

None of the Focus for Africa workers were injured and they have pledged to remain in Kenya and continue their work despite the added tension of elections in the town.

Zoey Barton of Bury St Edmunds told the Haverhill Echo she had heard a huge bang and dust exploded out of the walls.

Two people died instantly and five later in hospital while rescue attempts of trapped construction workers are ongoing.
