Haverhill Choral Society at Ickworth House

Haverhill Choral Society at Ickworth House

Review by David Rowlinson

An appreciative audience of over 70 including St Edmundsbury’s deputy mayor and mayoress councillor Tim Marks and Mrs Margaret Marks, enjoyed a musical feast at Haverhill Choral Society’s Christmas Concert at All Saints Church, Hundon on December 14.

The choir of more than 50, together with the Samuel Ward Academy Chamber Choir, gave voice to a variety of pieces ranging from I’m dreaming of a white Christmas to popular choruses from Handel’s Messiah, interspersed with relevant musical anecdotes from musical director Jane Wright.

In contrast to some of the more dynamic works, the voices of the seven girls of the Chamber Choir provided an almost angelic quality with 13 year-old Jessica Evans featuring as soloist.

Their performance of the Bob Chilcott song Can you hear me which included some sign language was particularly emotive whereas the choir’s ‘Handeling’ of the Hallelujah Chorus virtually raised the rafters.

As a tribute to the late John Tavener, one of our most respected composers who died recently, the choir performed The Lamb, a short, poignant piece in which he put to music the words of the poem by William Blake. Once again the choir were fortunate to be accompanied by organist Nigel Brown who was joined by cellist Bartie Shirm for certain works.

Judging by the response of the audience the evening was a great success and in concluding, Society chairman, Roma Holmes, thanked them for their support, afterwards endorsed by church warden Marcus Field-Rayner who extended his appreciation to all those involved.

Refreshments including mulled wine and mince pies were enjoyed after the concert.

The society’s next engagement is on Sunday (December 22) at 8pm when they will be joining the Haverhill Silver Band and Haverhill Operatic Society for the popular Carols for All at the Old Independent Church.

Their next concert is on Saturday, April 12 when the main piece will be the lovely Brahms Requiem.

Rehearsals commence on Monday, January 13 at 7.30pm in the Studio, Samuel Ward Academy, Chalkstone Way, Haverhill when anyone who wishes to experience the joy of singing will be welcomed.

If you are interested in joining a rehearsal contact Roma Holmes on 01440 761613.
