Haverhill Echo ten years ago

Echo, May 6, 2004

A vital meeting of Haverhill Town Council was abandoned because of councillors’ non attendance, the third meeting in a row that had to be cancelled because of a lack of councillors.

The council’s Leisure and Arts Committee had met to discuss the transfer of the town’s arts centre but it had to be postponed because only four of the five councillors required to make it a legal quorum were there.

Three of the councillors on the committee had given their apologies. Two of which had been attending a course at Haverhill Leisure Centre discussing child protection issues.

PLAY CENTRE DELIGHT

The keys to a new £500,000 children’s play centre in Haverhill were handed over.

Members of the Cartwheel’s Children’s Centre management committee were handed the keys for the Greenfields Way centre by architect Paul Mitchell.

The centre, which opened on July 5 and was backed by the borough council, Government and Lottery funding, included a special baby unit and will offer childcare for children up to the age of five

It also provided after school, holiday and breakfast clubs for children up to the age of 12.
