Hockey action from the East Womens league division two Southwest. Haverhill vs Hertford - relegation battle. FL;

Haverhill will be aiming to pick up some ‘bonus points’ from top half teams following last Saturday’s (January 12) 4-2 home defeat against fellow relegation strugglers Hertford in the East Women’s League Division Two SW.

Haverhill plunged back into the relegation zone after crashing to defeat in that must-win game against their rivals, who are also facing the drop.

That result saw the visitors leapfrog both Haverhill and Stevenage in the basement scrap of the East Women’s League Division Two SW.

Now Haverhill are second from bottom – with only rock bottom Crostyx II propping up the pack.

Stevenage are a point above them while Hertford moved three points clear as they completed the league double over Haverhill to boost their survival hopes.

Tomorrow (Saturday, January 19) they host mid table Royston (2.30pm start) as they aim to get back to winning ways and dodge the drop.

Judith Bock has now left the team to return to Germany, though she will be replaced by fellow exchange student Leoni Heyn.

Laura Humphry and Kim Thomas will also both return.

Captain Tina Bunch said: “This (the Hertford defeat) was a major setback, but Stevenage are potentially within our sights and we still have Crostyx II to play, so now we’re going to have try to surprise a top half team or team to get some bonus points having missed out.

“Results can get unpredictable towards the end of the season as teams bring young players in so hopefully we can pick some teams off.

“We remain optimistic as if we can get a point we can potentially move out of the bottom two, and if we win again we can start to think about moving up.”
