Horseheath thatcher rebuilds Ashdon Village Hall roof

One of the few remaining thatched village halls in Essex has been re-thatched for the first time in more than half a century.

Ashdon Village Hall now has the new roof to keep out the very worst of the wet weather we have recently been experiencing.

The old Norfolk reed that has lasted some 60 or 70 years but was beginning to wear thin and slip thus putting the water tight integrity of the roof at risk.

Ashdon Parish Council invited quotations from local thatchers and appointed B&T Mizon of Horseheath.

The job took five weeks and was completed using about 1,300 bundles of Norfolk reed.

The £19,000 cost of the project was grant aided by Viridor Credits, Essex County Council Big Society Fund, Stansted Airport Community Fund and the Parish Council.

To top it off Tom Mizon made two hares from wheat straw, which can now be seen running along the ridge.

The new thatch should last another 60 to 70 years and when it is next done they will find a time capsule in the roof with pictures of the work being done and copies of the village magazine with all the details and photographs of the Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics.

The village hall car park has also been re-surfaced and a video/audio system installed - thanks to a grant from Uttlesford District Council.
