Latest Haverhill panto is well worth going to see

With panto season upon us again, Echo reporter Jack Tappin went to see Centre Stage Company’s latest offering – Beauty and the Beast.

The amateur thespians’ latest pantomime did what they have been doing so well year after year, mixing children’s jokes and audience interaction with plenty of innuendo to keep the adults entertained throughout Steven Ridpath’s second directorial outing.

Bille Allen held the show together well as Beauty, the main constant throughout and having the most stage time.

Her role did not offer much opportunity for humour or interaction, but she did entertain the audience well. Nick Selin, in his first major role was the Beast – later to become Prince André – also entertained, although did not feature prominently until some way through the show.

Among the highlights were the pair performing a duet of Heart’s ‘Alone Again’, among many contemporary references mixed in with the traditional tale.

Becca Neal and Denise Harriss provided the most laughs as the seedy Toff and Fopp respectively – ‘I said we’re bankers’ and to Beauty ‘Just remember, there’s only a few inches of wood between us and you’ among their comedy highlight, along with an impromptu performance of Gangnam Style.

Steve Roach relished his role as the dame – Nanny Edna Middleton – strutting around with gusto, while Andy Letcher was also confident as Merchant Belly-Up.

Cian Harriss staked a claim to be the next dame during one scene, and was entertaining throughout as Mr Shriek.

The young George Allin was assured in his first Centre Stage role as servant Manuel.

Emma Letcher drew the boos as Fairy Demonica and Rowen Brittain the horrah’s as Fairy Angelica.

Fifteen year old Tamzin Kerslake had a successful first outing a choreographer and Ian Davison impressed as musical director.

Tickets available for tonight’s (Thursday, January 24) show – call 01440 714140.
