Haverhill, Clare and Kedington are among the Suffolk libraries aiming for another successful Summer Reading Challenge and are looking for volunteers who can help young readers get involved.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a popular and fun summer literacy campaign which aims to keep children reading during the holidays.

Last year was the most successful ever in Suffolk with 7,700 children taking part and nearly 2,400 children joining their local library to take part.

This year’s theme is ‘Mythical Maze’ and children aged four to eleven will be encouraged to find their way around a labyrinth that introduces them to fantastical creatures from the world of legend and mythology, collecting stickers of each character along the way as they complete reading challenges.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a national initiative by the Reading Agency which is promoted and co-ordinated across libraries. It’s widely accepted as one of the most successful ways of getting children engaged with reading and their local library.

Over 63,000 books were read by children in Suffolk who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge last year.

Some comments about the Summer Reading Challenge in Suffolk and the difference volunteering can make:

“My six year old daughter’s favourite part was talking to the volunteers about her books. They really made her feel special and grown-up.”

“Brilliant incentive to keep children reading during the summer. Even our four year old participated which is an excellent way to get him looking at books.”

Anyone interested in volunteering can contact their local library as soon as possible and children will be able to sign up to take part in the challenge just before the start of the summer holidays in July.

The 2013 Summer Reading Challenge was also the most popular nationally with over 810,000 children taking part. The Reading Agency is an independent charity with a mission to give everyone an equal chance in life by helping people become confident and enthusiastic readers.

It is funded by the Arts Council and has a formal partnership with public library services
