A man has been arrested following an allegation of sexual assault in Haverhill.
A 31 year old man was arrested at his home address in the Haverhill area on Sunday, August 31 on suspicion of rape.
He is currently being questioned by detectives at the police investigation centre in Bury St Edmunds.
The attack happened on August 31 in Haverhill. A 19 year old woman had been walking along Crowland Road between 3am and 4am.
The woman had been returning home after a night out in the town centre with friends when she was approached by a man who assaulted her.
She was physically assaulted and lost consciousness for several minutes before getting to her feet.
It is thought that she may have been sexually assaulted or raped.
The woman’s friends, who had become separated from her throughout this time, found her.
Since the incident, the woman has been with medical staff and specially-trained officers at the county’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre.
Investigating Officer, DI Nick Power, said: “At this stage, we have little information on this woman’s movements in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“We would like to hear from those people who know her and saw her in Haverhill on Saturday night or Sunday morning so that we can trace her steps and identify the people she met.
“We are continuing to speak with her friends who had been walking to their homes with her.”
Police cordoned off the scene while a forensic examination for the area was undertaken.
Anyone with information in connection with this assault is urged to contact detectives at Bury St Edmunds police station on 101, quoting HH/14/1719 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
