The Met Office has issued weather warnings for ice and snow into the weekend.

With parts of the country already suffering wintery showers and freezing conditions, the Met Office had already issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning for ice over the UK covering Scotland and stretching down as far as Norfolk, valid from 7pm tonight until 9am tomorrow.

It warns of wintry showers with snow at higher levels and of ‘low level disruption’.

The warning adds: “Clear spells between showers will allow ice to form on untreated surfaces.”

But this morning it added an additional warning valid from 3pm on Friday to 9am Saturday covering most of England and Wales, except eastern England north of the Wash and coastal areas of East Anglia.

The warning is for showers of rain, sleet or snow, gradually clearing by early Saturday, but it adds: “As this front clears south through the evening there is potential for widespread black ice to form quickly on road surfaces and pavements.

“Please be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions and for some travel disruption during the Friday evening rush hour and overnight into Saturday morning.”
