Healthy Ambitions, a charity taking action to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Suffolk and beyond, has appointed Richard Powell OBE as chief executive.

Mr Powell has experience of the charity sector, most recently as regional director for the National Trust in Eastern England.

He has also worked for 23 years as director of the RSPB in the East of England and chaired the Heritage Lottery Fund East of England.

Mr Powell said: “As the recent Health and Wellbeing Strategy for Suffolk sets out, there are massive challenges ahead for the county.

“Whilst the health and wellbeing of people in Suffolk is generally good, some groups and communities experience much poorer health than others.

“Healthy Ambitions will be introducing new and innovative programmes and activities to address this, with a particular focus on heart health.

“In difficult economic times, health is more important than ever.

“A healthy workforce is more productive, and healthy children perform better at school which improves their future prospects.

“We strongly believe that the right activities, all delivered in partnership with local organisations and businesses, will have a real impact on the health and wellbeing of those living in our county and region.

“I’m particularly excited about our ambitious plans with colleges and primary schools, to educate young people about healthy eating and where their food comes from.

“We are also looking forward to engaging with businesses, to create a way of working that enables profits to be made whilst the health of employees is improved.

“There’s lots happening - look out for the launch of new projects in the next few weeks.”

Dr Peter Funnell, executive chairman, said: “I am personally delighted that Mr Powell has joined us.

“In the role of chief executive, he will be leading the organisation to address health inequalities across the county and encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle for everyone.

“Richard has worked for two of the biggest membership charities in Europe, so has a great deal of experience which, combined with his energy and drive, will add great value to our work.”
