New generation of life savers is sought in Haverhill
St John Ambulance in Haverhill is launching a new cadet unit.
To give local youngsters a chance to find out more about being a cadet and making can a the difference in their community, an open day will be held at the charity’s Burton End base next Saturday (16) from 10am to 2pm.
The cadet unit is for people aged ten to 17 and will be the newest addition to the first aid charity’s thriving youth arm.
Guided by youth leaders, cadets take part in an interactive and full programme, working towards their Grand Prior Award – the highest achievement they can obtain as a cadet.
The programme enables young people to learn important life skills in a fun and safe environment, but with challenge and excitement appropriate to their age.
Cadets can choose from over seventy different subjects to help complete their award. These range from fire prevention and photography, to sports and first aid.
Younger cadets learn first aid skills through the charity’s training course for young people, while older cadets can undertake a community first aid course.
Unit manager Trevor Bailey said: “Being a Cadet gives you life experiences that colleges, universities and employers all look for.
“Being part of St John Ambulance shows you have commitment and responsibility to your community and you will also learn vital life saving skills too.
“You can also get real first aid experience and be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
“We’d love to see lots of young people and their parents at the open day, so do come along and find out more.”
