HAVERHILL Healthy Walking Group (HWHG), Walking for Health, has launched a new initiative, Walking for Beginners, to complement their fortnightly walks for people who recognise the health benefits of walking. The walks are free and open to anyone.
In association with Abbeycroft Leisure’s Active St Eds campaign HWHG leaders will also now be available at 10am on Mondays and Thursdays, in school term time, to assist people to gain confidence and increase fitness through walking.
The walks are suitable for those who may have just had surgery or serious illness, or to help weight loss, or for those who find even shopping trips or walking to the bus stop difficult.
Walking for Beginners starts on Thursday, October 11 at 10am when anyone is welcome to turn up at the bandstand on Haverhill Recreation Ground in Camps Road.
Walkers will be able to walk accompanied by HWHG volunteers for as long as they wish. On Mondays the activity takes place at the East Town Country Park, meeting in the car park at 10am.
As walkers develop confidence and a degree of fitness HWHG have a programme of local walks commencing from town venues providing graded challenges, and also village walks of about one hour.
Full details are available on the groups website, in a booklet called Stepping Out in Suffolk which is available from local libraries and from Abbeycroft Leisure or by contacting the organiser David on 704591.
